Lorry wedged under bridge in Edinburgh as police close road

A busy thoroughfare in Edinburgh has ground to a halt after a heavy goods lorry became wedged under a railway bridge.

The vehicle is understood to have lodged itself underneath the bridge at Cameron Toll in the capital at around 9am on Friday, February 10, Edinburgh Live reports. The DSV-branded trailer has tiled over to one side from the impact, the roof of the container warped out of shape by the force of the crash.

Edinburgh Travel News said of the collision on Twitter: "Cameron Toll bridge strike confirmed - the road is blocked between Peffermill Road and Old Dalkeith Road." Network Rail support teams and police are on the scene assessing the damage and the road has been closed.

Lothian Buses has confirmed that a number of services have been affected by the closure, with routes diverted to ensure they can continue to operate

It is not the first time a large vehicle has embedded itself in the railway bridge, which has a 4.5m (14ft 9ins) clearance, in a vain attempt to pass under it. The Record has reported on such incidents in September 2022, November 2021 and September of that year.

The road leads to a roundabout connected to Old Dalkeith Road - a major commuting route for motorists heading into the city from Midlothian. It also connects to a popular shopping centre, and to the Royal Infirmary Edinburgh.

Locals are baffled at the regularity with which incidents seem to occur at the Cameron Toll bridge. One said on Twitter: "How does this keep happening???"

Scott Archibald, who spotted the lorry this morning, posted: "Another lorry stuck under the bridge at Cameron Toll. lt might have just happened but I'd imagine traffic will become a nightmare."

Another user, who snapped a picture of the lorry cab tilted onto one wheel, said: "Passing by Cameron Toll. This bridge catches around three lorries a year. I think this the the first for 2023!"

Lorries becoming stuck have caused issues for vehicles trying to access the Royal Infirmary Edinburgh as well as the popular shopping centre in Cameron Toll. Edinburgh City Council has previously vowed to think up safety measures to avoid further disruption at the bridge.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We were made aware of a lorry having struck a railway bridge at Cameron Toll in Edinburgh shortly after 8.45am on Friday, 10 February. There are no reported injuries, recovery has been arranged for the vehicle and Network Rail were made aware to assess the bridge."
