A lorry driver has tragically died after being involved in a horror smash with another HGV and three cars on one of Scotland's busiest roads.
Emergency services were called to the scene on the A9, near Alness, at around 12.25pm today, following reports of a multi-vehicle collision.
Police Scotland have now confirmed that the 58-year-old driver of one of the lorries was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.
The other drivers and passengers were checked over by ambulance staff but did not require hospital treatment.
The busy Highlands road remains closed with specialist accident investigators in attendance as they try to determine the circumstances of the crash.
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson confirmed they had four appliances in attendance and a heavy rescue unit.
The incident is currently affecting traffic between Tain and Dingwall.
Sergeant Kate Park of the Road Policing Unit said : “Our investigation into the circumstances of what caused the crash is underway and our thoughts are with the family and friends of the lorry driver who sadly lost his life. His next of kin have been informed.
“It is crucial that we piece together what has happened.
“I would appeal to anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who has dash-cam footage to contact us as soon as possible, you may have captured something that could assist our investigation.
“Officers are still in attendance and the road is still currently closed for crash investigations.
“I would like to thank members of the public for their patience while we carried out our enquiries into this serious crash.
