Lorry catches fire on A96 as emergency crews race to scene

A lorry caught fire on the A96 this morning bringing traffic to a halt. Emergency crews raced to the scene at Alexandra Road, Elgin just after 10am this morning.

Cops locked down the road while the blaze was extinguished by Scottish Fire and Rescue. It is understood there were no casualties a as a result of the fire.

The closure of the road led to long tailbacks this morning, with Scottish Fire and Rescue confirming two appliances were sent to the scene.

A spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 10.07am on Wednesday, 9 November to reports of a lorry trail unit alight on the A96 in Elgin. Operations Control mobilised two fire appliances to the scene.

“There were no reported casualties and crews left shortly after once ensuring the area was made safe.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 10.10am on Wednesday, 9 November, officers were called to assist the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service with traffic management after receiving a report of a lorry on fire on Alexandra Road, Elgin."
