Lorraine Kelly praises Nicola Sturgeon as 'undeniably brilliant politician' after resignation

Lorraine Kelly has praised Nicola Sturgeon as a "brilliant politician" as she announced her resignation as the First Minster of Scotland.

The FM stepped down after eight years in the role and at a press conference this morning (Wednesday) she explained the "brutality" of modern politics had taken its toll. She added that she believed since first taking on the role in 2014 and following the Independence Referendum defeat that "part of serving well" is to know when the time is right to stand down.

Speaking at Bute House in Edinburgh, Sturgeon said: "In my head and in my heart I know that time is now, that it is right for me, for my party and for the country. And so today I am announcing my intention to step down as First Minister and leader of my party."

Taking to Twitter after the First Minister announced her resignation in a candid speech, Scots TV host Lorraine wrote: "“I am a human being as well as a politician” @NicolaSturgeon just gave an incredible deeply personal resignation speech.

"No matter where you stand on independence she is undeniably a brilliant politician and communicator, and will be missed as First Minister. Big shoes to fill."

Fans took to the comments on Twitter, and replied to Lorraine sharing her thoughts on the FM's announcement.

One wrote: "Agree with that Lorraine. She lead us all through the pandemic and her daily updates were appreciated by so many."

"Agreed it's a shame, I liked her," said another. A third penned: "Sad day for Scotland."

A fourth replied: "Have admired and respected Nicola Sturgeon for many years. Thought her straight talking, no nonsense vibe was great. Sad news today but wish her the happiest, healthiest and brightest of futures," while a fifth said: "I see it as proof that everyone no matter your job has their limits and we all get to a point where we’ve had enough and that’s it we call it a day."

Scots comedian Janey Godley also paid tribute to the FM following her resignation. The comic shot to fame in lockdown for her voiceovers of the First Minister during the coronavirus daily briefings.

Janey took to Twitter to give a nod to the sketches involving the First Minister, tweeting: "Frank is getting the door for Nicola for the last time today, hope you have a good time down at the caravan - you’ve earned the rest."
