Lorraine Kelly makes career move after 30 years in TV as she declares love for ITV co-star

Lorraine Kelly has revealed a brand new career move after 30 years of appearing on-screen. The presenter, who hosts her own self-titled show every weekday morning on ITV, has announced she will be releasing her debut novel, which is due to be published next year.

The 63-year-old said she had always wanted to write fiction and had felt that it was now the “right time” to do so. Titled The Island Swimmer, the book is due to be published on February 15 2024, by Orion Publishing.

Lorraine shared the news in a video announcement posted to social media on Monday. "I’m really delighted to share with you the news of my debut novel," she said.

"I’ve had such a brilliant time doing this. It’s something that I’ve always wanted to do. I always wanted to write fiction. And I just felt that this was the right time."

The Island Swimmer tells the story of Evie, a woman who returns to Orkney after years away and struggles to reconnect with her family and community. She finds herself taken in by a group of cold-water swimmers, a pastime that Lorraine herself enjoys.

"I wanted to bring my passion for that to the story as well, and really hope that you enjoy reading the book as much as I enjoyed writing it,” she said. Lorraine then said the novel was inspired by her love of the Orkney Islands, which is "very much at the heart of the story".

In the caption of her post, Lorraine added: "I’m excited to share the news that my first novel, The Island Swimmer, is coming next February from @orionbooks. It’s a book I’ve wanted to write for a long time, and I can’t wait for you to read it. It’s available now for pre-order from @waterstones, link in my bio."

Craig David was among the first to respond, writing: "Love this already. Love you." Stylist Mark Heyes replied: "Off to @waterstones tomorrow! Can’t wait to read it. Well done.. what an achievement." Good Morning Britain's Laura Tobin wrote: "About bloody time." Former Dancing on Ice star Ria Hebden said: "Huge achievement, Lorraine! Congratulations."

Lorraine also shared the news on Twitter and alongside the same video wrote: "A wee bit of news - been wanting to do this for ages! Tougher but even more enjoyable than I thought. Hope you will like it."

Lorraine has received rafts of support from friends and fans alike. Her ITV co-star Dr Amir Khan said: "Cannot wait, it will be ace!" to which Lorraine replied: "Love you"
