Loris Karius reflects on ‘up and downs’ of Liverpool career after leaving club

Loris Karius has revealed how struck he was by the high standards at Liverpool, as he goes in search of a new club.

The goalkeeper’s last appearance for the Reds came in the 2018 Champions League final, when he directly at fault for two of the goals his side conceded in a 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid.

Since then he has had loan spells at Besiktas and Union Berlin, while also spending time at Liverpool without getting any first-team opportunities.

Karius is leaving the club this summer, when his contract expires at the end of the month, with it not yet confirmed where his next destination will be.

Looking back at his time at Liverpool, who he joined in 2016, Karius emphasised the high standards in training every day as a key factor behind the success the team have enjoyed under Jurgen Klopp.

“There were ups and downs. It’s part of the game, that’s football, but I’ve developed as a person,” Karius told Sky Sports Germany.

“The level at which we worked every day and the professionalism that everyone exemplifies was unique. I have that I’ve never experienced it before and that’s why we’ve celebrated a lot of successes there.

“I’ll take this determination with me to my next job.”

He added: “I’m free and I can make my own decisions. This is a new situation that I’m looking forward to. A new challenge is coming up, but that’s always a good thing. I’m ready, mentally and physically .”
