Lord of The Rings fans 'nervous' after trailer drops for Amazon Prime TV series

Amazon Prime dropped a trailer for The Lord of the Rings TV series that is due this autumn - and fans seem nervous.

The Lord of The Rings: The Rings of Power will start on September 2, 2022 and is set many years before the events featured in JRR Tolkien's trilogy.

Reacting to the trailer, some viewers said it looks 'cheap', has too much CGI and doesn't have the grit shown in director Peter Jackson's three-film adaptation from 20 years ago.

Writing on twitter, The World's Last Night@WorldsLastNight said: "Makes me want to watch the original trilogy again to wash my eyes of this. Feels like the Hobbit series mixed with Peter Pan rather than LOTR.

Amy@82Ames wrote: "At least PJ’s elves looked like elves."

Taylor@SpaceTFL said: Just looks like another generic fantasy film, doesn't really give of a middle earth type of vibe and everything looks way too clean and polished.

"Lord Of The Rings was more gritty which really made middle earth stand out. Hopefully it's good but this teasers got me nervous."

But Introverted Dad@ranger_northern said: "Really wasn't a fan of the promo pictures and their "look" as I thought they looked a little cheap but credit where its due, I LOVED the trailer. So much in there its hard to pick out favourites.

And CAT@RACAT2001 said: "Just because the storyline is new and the characters are unfamiliar doesn't mean this will be a flop! Can people just watch the whole thing then judge for themselves?!?"

And A Tree Herder@Bliss_Hughes wrote: I’m so ready for this next adventure. It is SOO so beautiful."

The new series promises to delve into the so-called Second Age of Middle-earth before the Third Age story of Frodo, Sam, Gollum and the Dark Lord Sauron that was also recounted in the three blockbuster films.

Showrunners J.D. Payne & Patrick McKay said of the show: “The Rings of Power unites all the major stories of Middle-earth’s Second Age: the forging of the rings, the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron, the epic tale of Númenor, and the Last Alliance of Elves and Men.

"Until now, audiences have only seen on-screen the story of the One Ring — but before there was one, there were many… and we’re excited to share the epic story of them all.”

The series is based on the appendices from The Lord of the Rings, written by the Oxford professor and published in the 1950s.
