Newcastle's lord mayor has penned a heartfelt tribute to her father and former deputy lord mayor Paul Scobie, who died on Tuesday aged 75.
Lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes said her father was an "environmentalist, fierce conservationist, political activist, man of science, teacher of many, and loving husband, father and grandfather", who along with her mother, inspired her into community service.
Mr Scobie was elected as a Newcastle Labor councillor in 1999 and retired in 2008 when he was deputy mayor. Cr Nelmes carried the torch by being elected at the time of Mr Scobie's departure.
"He spent his life highlighting the need to protect our natural environment and was the initial driving force behind the City of Newcastle thinking locally, and acting globally to address climate change and sustainability, representing our City at the World Summit on Sustainability in 2002," Cr Nelmes said in a statement.
"I already miss him so much."
