Brenda Edwards was in tears on Thursday's Loose Women as she read out a personal letter that had been sent to her from the King following the death of her son, Jamal Edwards. It comes as the ITV daytime show returned to screens today for the first time since the Queen's death on September 8.
Singer Brenda Edwards joined Ruth Langsford, Jane Moore and Kelly Holmes on the show as they shared their memories of the Queen, as well as welcoming other Loose Women panellists via live link. Brenda recalled how she received a letter from King Charles III, then Prince, earlier this year following the sudden passing of her son, The Mirror reports.
Her 31-year-old son was an ambassador for the Prince's Trust and in 2014 was awarded an MBE for his services to music. She told the panellists of how she'd received a knock on her door, just days after Jamal had passed away, and a smartly dressed gentleman stood with a hat in his hand and a "beautiful" bouquet of white roses.
She was handed a letter, which turned out to be from King Charles. She then began to read it out: "Dear Miss Edwards, I particularly wanted to write and say how desperately sorry I was to hear the tragic news about your dear son Jamal and above all to send you my deepest sympathy.
"I can only begin to imagine what an immense and aching gap he will leave in your life and that of your daughter Tanisha. My heart goes out to both of you more than I can ever say," She continued to read.
"I shall never forget Jamal's dedication and support in helping with my Prince's Trust over the years. His commitment as an ambassador has made the most enormous difference to the trust's work and has helped to change the lives of countless disadvantaged young people."
As the singer continued, she paused to take a breath and chocked as she then read: "I have such fond memories of the times I met him and can ill afford in this country to lose someone as exceptionally special as your dear son. I fear that this letter can only be hopelessly inadequate under such soul destroying circumstances and will probably be of no comfort whatsoever in making your sense of anguish any easier to bear."
After finishing the letter, Brenda added how it was "humbling" and "comforting" to have received it. Many viewers watching from home praised the 53-year-old's "bravery" for reading out the heartfelt letter, whilst others shared how "heartbreaking" it was.
Vix posted: "#LooseWomen how hard it must have been reading that incredibly sensitive, thoughtful & compassionate letter and how lovely it was that the now King took the time to write & send it to you. Despite the grief you will always feel, you must be so proud of your son Brenda."
Sandra added: "It was heartbreaking hearing @brenda_edwards read out the beautiful letter she received from #KingCharlesIII on @loosewomen." A third viewer, Grace shared: "@brenda_edwards my heart breaks for you as you read the letter from King Charles, I went with you.. what a great achievement and a reminder of a man you have raised."
Bev tweeted: "I'm sorry Brenda. Thank you for sharing your letter it was beautiful." and Saranne added: "Thank you for sharing that with us Brenda, such bravery...#LooseWomen."
