Look Mum No Computer’s mum hails Eurovision semi-final: ‘He nailed it’

The performer’s mother said his stage name may have come from a time he was ticked off by her as a teenager (Ian West/PA) - (PA Wire)

Look Mum No Computer’s mum has said the Eurovision semi-final was “fantastic”, adding that her son “nailed it”.

The UK entry, whose real name is Sam Battle, performed his song Eins, Zwei, Drei, while dancing energetically with people dressed as computers during Thursday’s second semi-final.

His mother, Jane, was at the Wiener Stadthalle in Vienna to cheer him on and told BBC Radio 2: “It was fantastic. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

“I think he nailed it. It was great.

“I was cheering so much. In fact, my voice feels a little bit sore today.”

She also thinks his stage name could be from when he got in trouble and was sent to his room as a teenager.

Laughing, she recounted the story and said: “He was in trouble as a late teenager, and we said: ‘Oh, you go to your room anyway.’

“He (would be like) ‘anyway it doesn’t matter, I’ve got my computer in my room’ but of course, when (he went) to school we just went to his room and emptied it and just left his school books.

The YouTuber began his career with novelty videos in 2013 (Ian West/PA) (PA Wire)

“So that could be where his ‘Look mum I’ve got no computer’ (name came from).

“I don’t know, he’s said other things, but I think it might actually be from somewhere in about being 13 or 14, possibly.”

Battle had already qualified for Saturday’s grand final as part of the big four, along with Italy, Germany and France, who contribute the most financially to Eurovision, as well as Austria as this year’s host nation.

The musician began his YouTube career in 2013 and is best known for his homemade musical instruments which include an organ made from Furby toys and a triple oscillator synthesiser made out of Nintendo Game Boy consoles.

The Eurovision Song Contest grand final will take place on Saturday May 16.
