Google (GOOGL) leaned into artificial intelligence in its Google I/O conference on Wednesday and one of its initial announcements got a huge positive response from the live crowd in California.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced ‘Immersive View for routes’ as the newest feature of the company’s navigation app, Google Maps, where users are able to see an AI-generated bird’s eye view of their routes.

Google first introduced its immersive view technology in last year’s Google I/O, but is expanding the feature this year by inputting it into Google Maps to allow users to view their entire route before they actually make the trip.
“We’re expanding that same technology to do what Maps does best -- help you get where you want to go,” Pichai said during his presentation.
Pichai said Maps users can access the view whether “walking, cycling, or driving.” Users can also see the traffic and weather of their chosen route hours in advance of their journey to see if those change over time.
Google will be releasing the technology in the summer and will be available in 15 cities before the end of the year including New York, San Francisco, London, and Tokyo, according to Pichai.
