Have a Wicked time with the latest SFX

The two covers of SFX issue 385, and some of the features inside.

You have a choice of two covers when buying SFX issue 385, both related to the movie of Wizard of Oz musical Wicked (well, part one anyway...). Will you plump for Cynthia Erivo’s Wicked Witch of the West or Ariana Grande’s Glinda the Good?

Don't forget: if you live in the UK you can use this tool to find a stockist near you. Or you can order a copy online.

Inside we speak to Wicked director Jon M Chu, costume designer Paul Tazewell, production designer Nathan Crowley, and make-up designer Frances Hannon for a 10-page feature.

Dune: Prophecy

Set 10,000 years before the events of the Denis Villeneuve movies, this prequel series focuses on the origins of the Bene Gesserit sisterhood. We find out more from showrunner Alison Schapker and stars Jessica Barden and Jodhi May.

Silo

The dystopian drama focused on an underground community returns for a second season soon; we find out what’s in store from showrunner Graham Yost.
Plus in our latest behind-the-scenes showcase, we discover how production designer Gavin Bocquet and set decorator Amanda Bernstein went about creating the series’ stunning subterranean world.

Nautilus

Next we go on a sub mission, quizzing producer Xavier Marchand and director Michael Matthews about Nautilus, the latest take on Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas. Yes, it’s seas, plural. Look it up. And never doubt us again.

Star Trek: Lower Decks

Don the black armbands, and make sure you have a hanky handy to dab the corners of your eyes with: it’s time to bid farewell to the crew of the USS Cerritos, because the animated Trek show’s fifth season will also be its last. We put a comforting arm around the shoulders of showrunner Mike McMahan. Let it all out, fella.

Blake’s 7

The first series of classic ‘70s sci-fi show Blake’s 7 has been scrubbed up for a Blu-ray release, in the style of the BBC’s Doctor Who: The Collection box sets. We mark the occasion by speaking to director Michael E Briant.

But that’s not all, feature-wise! Up and coming star Jay Lycurgo tells us about tackling bloodthirsty pensioners for his latest series, Generation Z. We follow-up last issue’s look at the origins of Being Human by discussing the making of the final two series, in the company of the show’s creator Toby Whithouse and Damien “Hal” Molony. Plus we profile folk horror novelist Andrew Michael Hurley, and get Jeff VanderMeer to answer our author questionnaire.

Red Alert

And the big features are just the tip of the iceberg! As ever, our news section, Red Alert, is crammed with insights into yet more movies, TV shows, comics and books. In the spotlight this month: Hugh Grant-starring horror Heretic, Christopher Reeve documentary Super/Man, the latest batch of Outlander, Percy Jackson musical The Lightning Thief, and Tom Hardy’s comics debut – plus new Star Trek and What If...?-related titles.
