TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey Democratic Rep. Bill Pascrell Jr., a 14-term incumbent and a fixture in his hometown of Paterson for more than four decades, passed away at the age of 87. The sad news was confirmed through a statement on his social media account. Pascrell had been battling an illness and had been in and out of the hospital recently.
The statement released on Wednesday expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Pascrell, describing him as a beloved husband, father, and grandfather who fought tirelessly to return to the job he cherished and the people he loved. He was preparing to run for a 15th term in the upcoming fall elections.
Born and raised in Paterson, Pascrell's commitment to public service was evident throughout his life. After his education, he served in the Army and Army Reserve before embarking on a career in education. He worked as a teacher in Paterson and also served on the Board of Education from 1979 to 1982. His dedication to his community led him to the state Legislature and eventually to the role of Paterson's mayor from 1990 to 1996.
Following his tenure as mayor, Pascrell decided to run for Congress, a position he held for 14 terms. His passing marks the end of an era for Paterson and New Jersey, as he leaves behind a legacy of service and commitment to his constituents.
