A mother and daughter from Longford are set to embark on a massive 2,695km journey to hand-deliver supplies to Ukrainian refugees living along the border in Poland.
The pair have been collecting donations from the public over recent days, which they are packing into a truck and trailer that will travel via boat and road to deliver the supplies later this week.
Fighting in Ukraine has pushed more than 500,000 people across the country's borders so far, according to the UN refugee agency. Russia's invasion of the country has been condemned internationally.
With large humanitarian organisations focusing on supplying food, shelter and clothing for refugees, Hazel and Hilary Robinson put a call-out for other essentials to help what is mainly mothers, children, grandparents and pets who have left their men behind to fight.
Members of the public have been donating baby food, nappies, sanitary pads, Calpol, cat and dog food, veterinary care, power banks and sweets.
The mother and daughter duo run animal welfare organisation Hungry Horse Outside, which regularly brings unwanted animals to loving homes across Europe.
They plan to use their truck-driving skills and knowledge of driving through Europe to deliver the supplies and are generously funding the cost of diesel themselves through the charity.
The pair plan to set off on Thursday evening for a trip that they estimate will take a couple of days.
Announcing the plan on Facebook, Hazel wrote: “I’m delighted to be able to say that ‘Hungry Horse Outside’ in connection with ‘Stand with Ukraine- Waterford’, is offering to transport goods needed from Ireland to Poland.
“Our equine rescue will cover the cost of diesel. So it will be at no additional charge. Myself and my mother have offered our services to drive. Although down the list of priorities, we are trying to find out if we can bring some provisions for small pets belonging to families also.
“Small bit nervous, but eager to help. Hopefully more can also offer their services. Ireland stands with Ukraine.”
Anyone wishing to donate can drop supplies into the Hungry Horse Outside shop in Longford town.
