Skyrocketing numbers of patients taking up hospital beds who don't medically need to be there could create seismic issues for the country's largest health system.

NSW hospitals are projected to have 1700 patients waiting for federally-funded aged care or NDIS support by 2027 - an increase of around 700 in just two years.
