A long-serving Stewartry councillor is set to stand down in May.
Jane Maitland, who represents the Dee and Glenkens ward, says it is with “mixed feelings” she has decided not to seek re-election in May.
She said: “Having represented a part of the Stewartry since 1999, it is time to step aside. Being a councillor is a big responsibility and a truly rewarding role. There is something in our council’s sphere of activity to interest and stimulate everyone.
“Staff look after and educate children, inspect premises for hygiene, mend roads, support businesses, maintain good governance, respond to emergencies, liaise with national governments, defend rights of way, protect vulnerable adults – and I have still not mentioned half of the vital services.”
Mrs Maitland, who is the leader of the independents group on the council, added: “No job ever brought me more satisfaction when able to help someone, or more frustration when the corporate juggernaut rolled past, seemingly oblivious to efforts to divert it!
“But that is politics and change does happen when you build the necessary relationships. I consider it a ward strength to have worked successfully with my party political colleagues.
“Events in Ukraine make painfully clear how precious is our orderly, rules-based way of life here in Dumfries and Galloway. Democratic, transparent local government is essential.
“In May, Dee and Glenkens will have completely new representation on the council. Good luck to all candidates.”
