Long-lost sunken ship Ironton found in Lake Huron, ending 128-year-old mystery

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — Even for the Thunder Bay area, a perilous swath of northern Lake Huron off the Michigan coast that has swallowed many a ship, the fate of the Ironton cargo vessel that went down on a blustery night in September 1894 seems particularly cruel.

The 191-foot freight schooner collided with a grain hauler, sinking both.
