Long covid symptoms if you had omicron and how long it lasts

Catching covid can result in an individual feeling rather poorly for around one to two weeks after being infected.

Some of their symptoms may include a fever, a new and continuous cough as well as a loss or change to their smell and taste.

But when it comes to omicron, which spreads 70 times faster then delta, the symptoms are a little more specific - and this strain is one of the most reported on by scientists and other health officials due to its long list of symptoms.

The eight early warning symptoms of omicron according to data from the UK, US and South Africa are:

  • Scratchy throat
  • Lower back pain
  • Runny nose/congestion
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Sneezing
  • Night sweats
  • Body aches

But whilst symptoms tend to last a week or two, some people can have symptoms lasting three months, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS) with new data revealing that there is no correlation between developing long covid and how severe your initial infection was.

For many, long covid can severely impact their quality of life with the ONS stating that 65% of those with self-reported long covid say their symptoms adversely affected the day-to-day activities whilst 19% of those people said they have been 'limited a lot'.

So what are the symptoms of long omicron?

According to Birmingham Live, the latest variant was first reported to the World Health Organisation (WHO) on November 24 2021 and data on the symptoms of long-covid and omicron compared to other variants does not yet exist.

However, there are common signs you may be suffering from the continuing impact of catching covid no matter what the variant.

Fatigue was the most common symptom on the ONS report as part of an individual's experience.= with around 56% of those who self-reported symptoms complaining. This was then followed by shortness of breath (40%), loss of smell (32%) and difficulty concentrating (31%).

The NHS states the full list of symptoms as:

  • Extreme fatigue
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain or tightness
  • Problems with memory and concentration
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Heart palpitations
  • Dizziness
  • Pins and needles
  • Joint pain
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Tinnitus, earaches
  • Feeling sick, diarrhoea, stomach aches, loss of appetite
  • High temperature, cough, headaches, sore throat, changes to sense of smell or taste
  • Rashes
