BOKARO: Ganga, the lone surviving tigress at Bokaro’s Jawahar Lal Nehru Biological Park here, was found dead in her enclosure on Friday. Born in 2006, Ganga was a white tiger. Doctors at the zoo said she died of heart failure.
“The tigress was found dead in her enclosure, following which officials from the forest department were informed. The autopsy revealed heart failure as the cause of death,” BSL’s chief of communication Manikant Dhan said.
Six-year-old Ganga along with a male tiger named Satpura was brought to the zoo from Bhilai in Chhattisgarh in January 2012. She gave birth to three cubs, but unfortunately the cubs and Satpura died the same year.
Spread over 127 acres, the zoo has witnessed the death of nine tigers over a span of 14 years. “Ganga had lost her teeth due to old age and was on a diet of boneless minced meat,” doctors said.
Animal right groups have expressed concern over the medical facilities at the zoo. “The veterinary hospital is in shambles for years and there is no doctor for three months. The hospital is running on unskilled staff.
