Londoners most likely in UK to ask for pay rises, but most still won’t do so

Londoners are more likely than those in the rest of the UK to ask for a pay rise in the next year, with 42% believing they are underpaid, but only 30% said they would ask for a higher salary.

According to a YouGov survey with 2,104 respondents across the UK, 30% of those in London said they would ask for a pay rise in the next 12 months, significantly more than the UK average of 24%.

However, 54% of Londoners said they will not ask for higher pay, though this was lower than the UK-wide figure.

Among those asking for higher pay, just over a third said they would ask for a raise above the level of inflation, a third said they would ask for one in line with inflation, and just under a third said they would ask for an increase below the inflation rate.

Despite being more likely to ask for higher pay, the amount of Londoners who felt they were underpaid, was almost exactly level with the UK average both coming to around four in ten.

The survey also showed that Londoners have less confidence in their bosses than those elsewhere in the UK. Only 11% of those in the capital said they had “complete confidence” in their company’s leadership, while 15% said they had “no confidence”, which was almost a complete reversal of the UK-wide figures.

In addition, more  than one in four respondents in London - and just over one in five in the UK as a whole - said they were considering settling up their own business or “side hustle” this year.

The survey was commissioned by company formation agent 1st Formations, whose founder Graeme Donnelly said the increase in people looking to start a new venture was likely linked to workers feeling undervalued in their current roles.

“We know there’s a link between feeling dissatisfied in your current place of employment, and exploring other options - including entrepreneurship,” he said.
