(Picture: Reuters)Temperatures are set to plummet to freezing in London this week as a cold snap hits the UK.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a cold weather alert for England ahead of a plunge in temperatures, warning the cold weather could have “serious consequences” for health.
The Met Office predicts weather in the capital will largely be “fine” by day, but “cold and frosty” by night.
London is expected to enjoy sunshine on Monday through to Wednesday with overnight frost and fog likely, before Thursday and Friday bring an overcast end to the week.
Wednesday is expected to see the coldest weather of the week, with temperatures due to reach freezing in the morning, although the Met Office warns it could feel more like -2C.
The UKHSA is urging people to stay warm and to look out for elderly and vulnerable people.
The Met Office and UKHSA warned all regions of England would experience cold weather from 6pm on Sunday to 6pm on Tuesday.
Dr Agostinho Sousa, Consultant in Public Health Medicine at UKHSA, said: “Cold weather can have serious consequences for health, with older people and those with heart or lung conditions particularly at risk.
“It’s important to check in on family, friends and relatives who are more vulnerable to the cold weather. If you have a pre-existing medical condition or are over the age of 65, it is important to try and heat your home to at least 18C if you can.”
David Oliver, Deputy Chief forecaster at the Met Office, added: “From Sunday and into early next week, an area of high pressure will dominate the UK’s weather.
“This will bring some cold nights with a widespread frost across the country. However, by day temperatures will recover to around mid-single figures, near normal for the time of year.”
