London weather: Capital to be hotter than Barcelona this weekend with temperatures set to reach 20C

London is expected to be hotter than Barcelona this weekend with temperatures set to hit 20C.

A grey Friday was due to bring more downpours but the Met Office says it will make way for a warm, dry couple of days - welcome news to Londoners following a week of tumultuous weather including heavy rain.

Temperatures in London are forecast to hit 20C on Saturday, meaning it will be as warm as Italy’s capital Rome, and around a degree hotter than Barcelona.

Met Office spokesperson Stephen Dixon told the Standard: “It’ll be a dry and fine weekend for London, with some warmth to be had in the sunshine.

“Saturday will start relatively cloudy but this cloud will quickly dissipate and leave good sunny spells with possible highs of around 20C in London.

“It’s a similar story on Sunday. There’s a chance of some early patchy fog for some in in the east, though this will once again largely break up leaving a day with some good spells of sunshine and temperatures likely in the high teens.

“By Sunday night, some frontal rain is advancing from the northwest of the UK and could set up some more patchy, showery rain through the day on Monday, with temperatures likely dipping slightly from the previous few days.”

According to the Met Office, the chance of rain in London is less than five per cent throughout Saturday.

Sunday also looks likely to remain dry, with the likelihood of rain not surpassing 10 per cent for much of the day.

It comes after heavy rain in the UK earlier this week led to a major incident being declared in Somerset, which was hit by severe flooding.

The Met Office also issued a yellow warning after heavy rain, thunderstorms and hail disrupted travel in the area and the forecaster also warned of potential damage caused to buildings by lightning strikes.
