The capital is set to be buffeted by winds of up to 50mph this weekend amid the Christmas getaway.
London is set to be among the areas in the country where there are strong winds, according to forecasters at the Met Office, which could bring some travel disruption.
However, Christmas Day itself is expected to be settled, cloudy and dry, with little chance of snow and very mild temperatures for this time of year.
Severe weather warnings for wind have been issued for large parts of the UK on Saturday and Sunday, although London escapes the worst of the gusts.
In affected areas, which encompasses much of the west and north of the country, people are being warned of potential delays to “road, rail, air and ferry transport”.
Some short-term power cuts are also possible, the yellow weather warning states.
Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist, Rebekah Hicks, said: “This period of disruptive weather coincides with a busy period on UK roads as the festive getaway starts for many.
“The area of low pressure will bring rain and strong winds on Saturday, with a chance of significant disruption especially to transport networks across the north, including the potential for ferry cancellations.
“The strongest winds are expected across northern Scotland on Saturday afternoon and evening, with the potential for gusts of 80 to 85mph in coastal districts.
“The strong winds will be more widespread on Sunday with gusts of 50-60mph across much of northern, central and western UK, locally higher for coasts and across high ground.”
Forecasters added the chance of snow for Christmas Day was “looking slim” due to mild temperatures.
It comes as data by the RAC suggests that this weekend will be one of the busiest on major roads at Christmas time in recent years.
It has estimated 29.3m Christmas getaway journeys will be made by drivers to see friends and family in the run-up to the 25th – the highest number since 2013 – with nearly half of these crammed into this coming weekend.
It predicts that queues of more than 45 minutes are likely on Friday evening on the M3 in Surrey and Hampshire between the M25 in west London and the south coast.
The M25 anticlockwise from the junction with the M1 near Watford to the M23 for Gatwick Airport is also expected to be busy as drivers leave the capital for the south coast or jet off for some winter sun.
