London Underground driver punched in face by man after finding him asleep on train

A Tube driver was punched in the face by a man after finding him asleep on a train, a Transport for London (TfL) report has revealed.

The driver was attacked at Acton Town station after he woke the man up on a terminating train on January 13.

Station staff assisted the driver and the British Transport Police arrested the man at the scene.

The unnamed suspect was charged with common assault on April 25 and was ordered to pay £815 in fines, costs and compensation.

A TfL report has highlighted several serious assaults against transport workers.

A bus driver was also punched in the face after a man who missed the bus began shouting at him.

The driver was attacked while waiting at traffic lights on July 18 2022 on the route K1 near Cromwell Bus Station.

He was left with swelling and a bruise below his eye.

The Metropolitan Police identified the suspect, who is not named in the report, and charged him with committing actual bodily harm.

Following significant delays the suspect was sentenced to 20 months in prison on April 26 2024.

A judge told the suspect that the offence was more serious because it was committed against a person providing a public service.

The report also described an incident at King’s Cross where a man barged past a Customer Services Assistant and threatened him with further violence after being challenged for sleeping on a platform bench.

The worker had been wearing a body worn camera and the British Transport Police identified a suspect from the footage following the incident on June 4 2023.

A man was arrested and charged with Common Assault. The suspect pleaded guilty and was sentenced to prison for seven weeks on March 13.
