Huge tailbacks formed on the M25 on Friday after a serious crash between junctions 7 and 8 in Surrey.
Three out of four lanes were closed with 11-mile tailbacks and two-hour delays as of 8.38am, according to traffic monitoring site Inrix. All three lanes were open as of 2.30pm, said National Highways, but there could still be delays of over an hour.
Three people have been taken to hospital with serious injuries, one of which is believed to be life-threatening.
The M25 also had to close on Friday evening between Junction 4 (Bromley) and Junction 5 (M26) after a van fire, National Highways said. The road has since reopened.
Meanwhile, one person was found dead on the tracks at Amersham Underground station on Friday morning. The police are not treating the incident as suspicious. Separately, trains into Marylebone face disruption for the whole of Friday due to a signalling fault.
