Why this week's RMT walkouts were the least effective for years
14:36 , Alastair LockhartThis week’s Tubestrikes by RMT members have been the union’s least effective walkouts on the London Underground for years, data has revealed.
The second of two 24-hour walkouts this week ended at midday on Friday, but services were not expected to return to normal levels until Saturday.
Official figures show that a normal service continued on more than half of scheduled trains across all London Underground lines on Tuesday.
Sources within the transport authority said they could not remember any previous RMT strikes in which over half of the planned services continued to operate.
While only around 60% of Tube drivers reported for work, passengers have been able to get around the city much easier than during the strikes in September last year.
Londoners hit by bus strikes

London pubs suffering amid walkouts
07:54 , Tom PlaceNew data from Harri shows that TfL strikes are having a significant impact on London’s hospitality sector, with pub revenues down a significant 54% in the week-to-date.
Total hospitality revenue across hundreds of London venues has dropped 18% compared to last week, according to the research.

With further strike action planned, Harri warns the pressure on pubs and local venues is only set to intensify.
Dan Maimone, Head of Global Customer Experience at Harri, said: “Strike action has compounded the myriad of challenges already facing the hospitality sector. These figures are a big blow, particularly with more strike days planned.
“Supporting local pubs and hospitality venues on strike days has never been more important, and we’d encourage people to make every effort to visit and back their neighbourhood businesses where they can.”
Aslef 'surprised' by strike action
07:40 , Tom PlaceDrivers trade union Aslef said it was “surprised” that RMT had decided to take action this week, given the changes to the working week are voluntary.
A spokesperson told The Standard: “We are surprised that the RMT has decided to take this action.
“The voluntary four-day week gives Tube train drivers an extra 35 days off every year with rosters based on a 34-hour working week in return for some fairly minor changes to working conditions and moving to electronic, rather than paper-based, systems for booking on for duty.
“And, as it is voluntary, anyone who wants to keep working a five-day week will be able to do that.”
How to beat the strikes
07:33 , Tom PlaceWhile all London Underground lines are affected by the Tube strikes, there are still plenty of ways to get around the city if you plan ahead, and several services will continue to run as normal.
The Standard has pulled together a guide detailing how to avoid the worst of the chaos amid the strikes this week.
Northern line update
07:24 , Tom PlaceThe Northern line has now partly reopened.
The line is currently operating at a reduced frequency between High Barnet and Morden via Bank - there remains no service on the rest of the line.
Why are the Tube strikes happening?
07:19 , Tom PlaceToday’s walkout is be the second in a series of six planned 24-hour strikes by drivers on the Tube in the coming months.
It comes after Transport for London (TfL) offered Tube drivers the chance to work a four-day week - but the RMT rejected the offer, citing driver fatigue and compromising safety, as the changes would mean drivers worked longer shifts on days they worked.
TfL said that drivers could remain on a five-day week if they wanted to, that the change was voluntary, and there would be no reduction in contractual hours.
TfL’s chief operating officer Claire Mann said: “We have set out proposals to the RMT for a four-day working week.
“This allows us to offer train operators an additional day off, whilst at the same time bringing London Underground in line with the working patterns of other train operating companies, improving reliability and flexibility at no additional cost."
For more information on why the strikes are going ahead, you can read the full article here.

Even once the walkout ends, disruption should go on well into the afternoon, as it did on Wednesday.
London Underground bosses have urged the RMT to call off the strike and meet for talks, with more 24-hour strikes planned for May and June unless the row is resolved.

London pubs suffer 'worst-ever' trading days amid walkouts

Many commuters have chosen to avoid the journey into central London altogether, prompting disastrous impacts for pubs and restaurants who rely on commuter footfall.

Mark Reynolds, director of the Three Cheers Pub Group, said the group’s Trafalgar Pub in Chelsea has had its trade “destroyed” by the Tube strikes.
“We’re looking at one of our lowest trading days to date,” he told The Standard.
“It’s incredibly frustrating for businesses who are impacted negatively. There is no compensation in the form of business rates or rent reductions.”
Underground bosses urge RMT to call off strike
Thursday 23 April 2026 07:40 , Tom PlaceLondon Underground bosses are urging the RMT to call off today’s strike.
Nick Dent, Director of Customer Operations for London Underground urged the union’s leaders to meet with them “to avoid any further disruption to Londoners.”
“While we have been able to run more services than planned over the last 24 hours, we expect significant disruption to continue into Friday and the level of service we can provide will vary across lines, so customers should continue to check before they travel for the remainder of this week.

“We have set out proposals to the RMT for a four-day working week which are supported by the other Trade Union representing London Underground drivers.
“This allows us to offer train operators an additional day off, whilst at the same time bringing London Underground in line with the working patterns of other train operating companies, improving reliability and flexibility at no additional cost.
“The changes would be voluntary, there would be no reduction in contractual hours and those who wish to continue a five-day working week pattern would be able to do so.”

Why are the Tube strikes happening?
Thursday 23 April 2026 07:09 , Tom PlaceToday’s walkout will be the second in a series of six planned 24-hour strikes by drivers on the Tube in the coming months.

Aslef 'surprised' by strike action
Wednesday 22 April 2026 08:53 , Tom PlaceDrivers trade union Aslef said it was “surprised” that RMT had decided to take action this week, given the changes to the working week are voluntary.
