London's first new permanent Gypsy, Roma and Traveller housing site in decades planned

The capital’s first new permanent Gypsy, Roma and Traveller housing site in decades is being planned for north London.

Haringey council has begun consulting on locations that can accommodate six “much needed” pitches across the borough.

The town hall said it has undertaken a “comprehensive review” of potential sites on vacant council land.

They include The Roundway in Tottenham, Brookside Green in Edmonton and Clyde Road in south Tottenham.

If the plans are approved they will be the first new permanent housing sites for Travellers in London in 30 years, the council said.

Sarah Williams, Haringey’s deputy leader and cabinet member for housing, said the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller community are “among the most discriminated against groups in the UK and face critical challenges in accessing housing that meets their cultural needs”.

She added: “I’m delighted to be announcing proposals for developing the first new Gypsy, Roma and Traveller sites in the capital for three decades.

“Not only is it a fitting move for our borough, which prides itself on being welcoming and diverse, it also aligns completely with our commitment as a council to providing 3,000 new, affordable and great quality homes for the future.

“This includes specialist housing to meet the needs of all of our communities.”

There is an existing Traveller site in Clyde Road and the council is also responsible for long-standing pitches at Wallman Place.

The consultation on the new pitches runs until December 22 and has been sent to households in the proposed areas.

It comes as Enfield council finishes consulting on a series of proposed local sites to accommodate 30 permanent pitches that would be provided to Travellers until 2041.

Lewisham's first new- Gypsy and Traveller site in 15 years could also be built on a strip of land north of the Pool Court estate in Catford.

The community has been without a dedicated space in the borough since 2009 when a former site near Lewisham town centre was closed.
