London MP Bambos Charalambous has been suspended from the Labour Party pending investigation following the receipt of a formal complaint to its independent complaints process.
The administrative suspension of party membership also has the automatic effect of suspending the Labour Whip in the House of Commons from the Enfield Southgate MP.
Mr Charalambous has also immediately been stood down from his frontbench responsibilities, pending investigation.
He was shadow Foreign Office minister for Middle East & North Africa.
Mr Charalambous tweeted: “I am aware that there is an allegation that requires investigation by the Labour Party.
“It is right and proper that process is allowed to take place. I will cooperate fully and play my full part.
“It is not appropriate to say anything further at this time.”
An investigation was launched immediately upon receipt of the complaint. The suspension took place within 24 hours.
It is understood that Labour believes it would be inappropriate to comment on the nature or details of this complaint.
A suspension of membership and removal of the whip carries no presumption of guilt.
