London mayor’s car tax conviction withdrawn after ‘scam’

  • A car tax conviction against Mayor of London Lord Sadiq Khan has been formally withdrawn following a request by the DVLA.
  • Lord Khan had previously been fined £220 under the controversial fast-track Single Justice Procedure over an untaxed 2002 Nissan Micra.
  • City Hall said that the mayor was the victim of a “scam” involving motorists falsely registering vehicles in his name following the Ulez expansion.
  • Court records revealed that official letters regarding the unpaid tax bill were sent to a Gordon Ramsay restaurant instead of Transport for London offices.
  • Magistrates at Hereford Justice Centre formally reopened the case and marked the matter as withdrawn during a brief court hearing.
