London Gatwick says “fuel is flowing” as normal after airlines were warned that the airport was facing a fuel shortage, threatening to affect all airlines.
Pilots were reportedly sent emergency alerts on the weekend about the fuel shortages and were advised to load up on more fuel at other airports.
In a memo seen by The Sun, staff were warned: “For attention of all crews: Gatwick has a shortage of fuel for the next two days.
“Please uplift max possible fuel at outstations.”
A separate “emergency” notification was issued to airline bosses of “potential disruption to the Gatwick fuel supply”.
Yet in an update from the airport, a Gatwick spokesperson told The Independent: “Following a temporary technical issue yesterday (Sunday 2 August) that impacted fuel supply to the airport, we are pleased to report that the issue has now been resolved.
“Fuel is flowing as expected, all airlines are operating as normal, and passengers should continue to travel as planned. We will continue to monitor the situation closely."
The airport experienced no disruption to flights as a result of the temporary issue.
It is understood that engineers worked to fix a technical issue at one of the airport’s fuel suppliers.
This issue is unrelated to the conflict in the Middle East, which has previously sparked concerns about fuel shortages.
A London Gatwick spokesperson previously told The Sun: “Following a technical issue impacting fuel supply to the airport, airlines have been advised to monitor fuel availability.
“We are working closely with external suppliers to resolve the issue as quickly as possible and minimise any potential disruption.
“All airlines are operating as normal.”
The issue comes a week after the airport suffered a major water shortage, which meant passengers were unable to flush toilets or use hand washing facilities.
