London consultant found with child sex abuse images struck off

A London consultant who was found with horrific sexual abuse images of children has been struck off.

Dr James Burrow, a former anaesthetist at Charing Cross Hospital in Hammersmith, avoided jail after being caught in November 2022 with child sexual abuse and bestiality images on a computer at his west London home.

A misconduct panel has now barred the 46-year-old from the medical profession.

The panel heard how 21 Category A images - the worst kind of child sexual abuse material - alongside ten Category B images and 112 Category C images were discovered on his computer. One of the images appeared to show a five-year-old child who had been drugged and raped.

Extreme images showing sexual abuse of a horse were also recovered.

In mitigation, he repeated his defence in court that he had not sought out child abuse material, claiming he had came into possession of the files while attempting to download legal pornography from file-sharing sites.

Burrow, who did not attend the hearing in person, said he “downloaded numerous files” without looking at them, and was shocked to discover a “tiny minority” were of child sexual abuse, which he deleted.

He said he had since undertaken therapy, and that he was ashamed of his actions and devastated at the impact they have had on his family, and friends.

But voting to bar him from the profession, the panel ruled: “The Tribunal was of the view that Dr Burrow’s conviction for these sexual offences involving children was a particularly serious departure from the standards of GMP [good medical practice] and was fundamentally incompatible with being a doctor.

“Dr Burrow had undermined and breached the trust and confidence of patients and the public in the medical profession.

“The convictions inevitably brought the profession into disrepute.”

An suspension to cover an appeals period is also in effect.

The panel heard that Burrow resigned from his post at Charing Cross Hospital when the allegations came to light and that he has not worked since.

He was previously handed a 40-week jail, suspended for 18 months at Isleworth Crown Court in December 2023 and a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for a period of 10 years.
