London buses set for more disruption as drivers vote for strikes again

Bus drivers in north east London have backed strike action over bullying and union busting - (Leif Jørgensen)

Major disruption is expected on more than a dozen bus routes in east London next month as bus drivers back further strike action.

Two 48-hour bus strikes have been called by the union Unite in an ongoing dispute over alleged bullying and union busting at Leyton bus garage.

Stagecoach previously said it “utterly refutes” the union’s claims.

The 97 bus, which runs between Chingford and Stratford via Walthamstow and Leyton, is one of 13 routes expected to be affected by walkouts.

The union said previous strikes in December and January caused “major disruption” over the festive period, with mass cancellations.

Workers at the Lea Interchange Bus Company, which is part of Stagecoach, have agreed to take further strike action next month, claiming there has been an “absence of credible proposals” to solve issues at the depot.

Drivers will walk out on 6 and 7 February and 20 and 21 February, impacting weekend travel including shopping trips to Westfield as well as half term journeys.

Unite regional officer John Murphy said: "We appreciate it is frustrating for passengers to hear of more strikes, but this dispute is completely the fault of the employer who has failed to come forward with a plan to resolve this problem.

"Previous strikes showed a lot of unity between drivers and they will continue to show solidarity towards their colleagues who have been unfairly targeted. Instead of continuing to bully Unite members, management must come back with a clear plan to resolve the issue in order to stop further disruption to bus services."

The routes affected by the upcoming strike action are 58, 86, 97, 135, 236, 276, 308, 339, 488, D8, W13, W14 and 678.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: "These strikes could be avoided, but it relies on management changing tack. Unite will never stand by and allow reps to be bullied and workers at the Lea Interchange Bus Company have our full support throughout this dispute."

A TfL spokesperson said: “We encourage Unite and Stagecoach to work together to come to an agreement and avoid disruption to Londoners.”
