A mezzanine floor collapsed at a London bar leaving more than a dozen people injured, as police declared it a major incident.

The partial building collapse happened at Two More Years in Hackney Wick, east London, on Saturday afternoon.

Diners reported hearing a "cracking noise" and seeing dust coming down from the ceiling before it crashed onto the floor below.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) said it had rescued seven people. Paramedics treated 13 people, three of whom had potentially serious injuries. Four were taken to hospital.

Police declared it a major incident and warned hospitals to be on standby to receive a large number of patients.

Sacha Clement, the LFB's station commander, said: "Firefighters carried out a systematic search of the building and rescued seven people from inside.

"They were trapped on the remaining part of the mezzanine floor and crews used a ladder to bridge between the floor and the internal staircase to get them safely out of the building."

A diner said: "There was just this sort of cracking sort of noise and dust started coming down. Me and my friend just ran to the side and the whole thing just came down in a matter of seconds."

London Mayor Sadiq Khan thanked the ambulance service, fire brigade and police for their "swift action".

"My thoughts are with those affected by the incident in Hackney Wick this evening," he said. "I wish all those injured a speedy recovery."
