Shortly after the New York Giants released safety Logan Ryan last March, the veteran filed a grievance against the team.
Ryan had $5.5 million of his 2022 salary fully guaranteed but there was also an $8.5 million total guarantee against injury. At the time of his release, Ryan was coming back from an offseason finger surgery and argued that he was owed the remaining $3 million.
Buy Giants TicketsWhile the two sides awaited a resolution, the Giants were forced to carry 40% of the disputed amount against the 2022 salary cap. That accounted for $1.2 million, leaving the other $1.8 million to be settled.
Dan Duggan of The Athletic reports that the grievance has now been resolved with Ryan largely winning out.
“Logan Ryan’s grievance has been settled, according to NFLPA records. The Giants will carry a $1.5M cap charge this year from the settlement. They carried a $1.2M cap charge last year while the grievance was pending,” Duggan tweeted.
“The sides were disputing $3M that Ryan had in an injury guarantee. He was cut last March a few weeks after having finger surgery. Ultimately, Ryan received $2.7M.”
The $1.5 million owed to Ryan will count as a dead cap charge for the Giants in 2023. It is currently the fourth-largest Joe Schoen will have to manage behind Kadarius Toney, Sterling Shepard (still on the team) and, of course, Kenny Golladay.
The Giants saved very little in the settlement, shaving off just $300,000 of the possible $1.8 million this season (and $3 million total).
