Lockerbie hotel set to close its doors for the last time

The Townhead Hotel in Lockerbie has been sold and will shut its doors for the last time on Thursday.

Owner Stephen Montgomery said he made the decision to “maximise time with his family”.

He added: “In the last two years, we’ve all had time to reflect on our lives and what is most important to us. Owning and running a venue of the stature of the Townhead Hotel for the last eight years has been the greatest privilege, but it is also so much more than a full-time job.

“After much soul-searching, I’ve decided my priority at this stage of my life is to maximise my time with family and give myself more time to pursue my other passions in life. This is a personal choice only, and for no other reason.”

The Townhead featured in the hit Channel 4 show Four in a Bed in 2017 where Mr Montgomery won and he thanked staff and customers for the support he’s been shown.

Staff will be paid until the end of March and will be offered a role at the new business which will take over the site later this year.

However, Mr Montgomery was unable to reveal who has bought the premises and what it will be.

He added: “I appreciate that this will be a worrying time for my loyal staff, who have been through so much with me - some from the beginning - and especially over the last two years.

“I have been talking with them, and I will continue to do so, about how they will be supported by me from here.

“The staff that are here are being paid right the way through until the end of March so they are getting well looked after. Every single one has been offered, whenever the new place opens, to move across and take employment there. They understand why I’m doing this.

“I want to thank the local community for every single bit of their support in my time at the Townhead and especially the last two years.

“They’ve come out and supported us in the darkest days of Covid and put their trust in us to keep them safe.

“For all of my staff there’s a debt of gratitude that can’t be explained in a newspaper.”
