Lockerbie-based business owner shortlisted for national entrepreneur award

A Lockerbie-based business owner has been shortlisted for a national entrepreneur award for unique eco innovation.

Toby McCartney, co-founder and chief executive of MacRebur, the plastic road company, is a regional finalist in the Disruptor of the Year category in the Great British Entrepreneur Awards.

He set up his business in 2016 with friends Gordon Reid and Nick Burnett to help tackle the waste plastic epidemic.

The team developed a unique product made from non-recyclable waste plastic, incorporating it into the material used to build roads.

Mr McCartney said: “It’s a huge honour to be shortlisted in the Great British Entrepreneur Awards.

“I’m an entrepreneur but I’m an environmentalist first. MacRebur offers a sustainable method of creating roads that are better quality, longer lasting and more cost efficient.

“We set out to truly disrupt the sector and show the world that the solution to our waste plastic problem could be found right under our noses – or tyres.”

The Great British Entrepreneur Awards champions the hard work and stories of business owners across the UK. BBC Dragon’s Den’s Steven Bartlett is a notable previous winner. The winners will be announced on November 21 at a ceremony in London.
