Residents on the Mull of Kintyre have demanded answers after an Israeli weapons company set up a military-style compound at a beauty spot car park.
Elbit Systems, which makes military drones and other high-tech weapons systems, caused a storm at Carradale Bay when it erected communications masts and, locals claim, launched mini-submarines.
The controversial company also had a vessel operating from Campbeltown and 16 Israeli guests were said to be staying at the town’s Royal Hotel.
It is also claimed that MoD and UK Border Force staff were assigned to the area during the reconnaissance trip last week.
Local businessman Niall Macalister Hall, who owns the Torrisdale Castle estate, told the Record: “They were pretty arrogant and said they didn’t need permission to do anything. They design and operate drones and they are into weapons systems, so we’re naturally wanting to know what they are up to.”
Steve Ayden added on Facebook: “Anyone know if the car parking area has reopened? Or is it still a secret military research site?” It’s alleged that Elbit drones have been involved in “war crimes”.
Elbit Systems UK employs 600 people over 13 sites, many of which have been targeted by protestors from the Palestine Action group. Elbit Systems and the MOD have been contacted for comment.
