Local hero saves little girl and dad from smoking wreck after car flips on M1

A van driver saved a little girl and her dad from a car crash on the M1 this evening.

Ken Flanagan said his "monkey strength" and adrenaline came into play when he noticed smoke coming out of the wreck.

The family had crashed into the barrier on the J6 exit, with the car immediately flipping in the air.

The local hero sprang into action with strength he did not even know he had.

The shaken DJ was just behind the horrific crash when it happened and believes that he was there for a reason.

He said: "The car in front of me just went straight into the barrier. It went up into the air and hit the J6 sign sideways.

"I ran over and the car was on its side. I screamed asking if everyone was okay and his hand came up.

"I couldn't open the door. The door was jammed shut. I pushed the door open and I pulled him halfway out but he was still strapped in.

"When I eventually pulled him out he kept saying that his daughter was in the back. The back door wouldn't open then. I tried to wedge that one open. I had the front door held open with my right hand so with my left hand I opened the back door.

"I leaned in and I saw his little girl strapped into the seat. The smoke from the engine was now coming out onto the motorway.

"The car was clicking and I thought it was going to go on fire.

"The straps were caught around her leg and I couldn't get her out. The panic set in and time stood still.

"I pushed her in under the straps and got her out. I pulled the two of them to safe and then a fireman was just a few cars behind us.

"He was an off-duty fireman and he came over and gave us a hand.

"We held their heads straight until the ambulance came along."

The KDM Hire driver is still in complete shock after rushing to the rescue but is glad he was there to help.

He said: "I'm shaking with trauma but ecstatic too. I found monkey strength and pulled the doors open

"God works in mysterious ways. I was meant to be there."

A garda spokesman said: "Gardai attended a single car rtc on the M1 at approximately 1:15pm this afternoon. No injuries were reported and the road has since fully reopened."
