Local Edinburgh residents slam construction workers for 'drilling at midnight'

Local Edinburgh residents have slammed construction workers on the Leith tramline for allegedly 'drilling at midnight' in the residential area.

Danny Walker who lives on Leith Walk was walking home from work on Tuesday October 11 at 00.30am when he noticed a group of workers drilling into the street.

The fuming local filmed the loud noise from the works and hit out at the council for allowing disruptive construction work to be carried out at such an inappropriate time.

The Trams to Newhaven project, which runs through Leith Walk and Broughton Street among other areas, has caused traffic, bus diversions and community frustrations along Leith Walk as development has been ongoing since November 2019.

To date, 4.5km (96 percent) of track has been laid, with tram track now running continuously from Picardy Place to Tower Place, 100% of utility diversions have been completed and major civil works are finished on five of the eight new tram stops.

Leith resident Danny Walker told Edinburgh Live: "I obviously cannot stress how unfair this is of Edinburgh City Council to be preforming roadworks with power tools at half past midnight on a Wednesday.

"I was actually standing outside the door to my building when I took the video.

"I'd just finished my shift at work just not far down the road."

"Impact wise, people have jobs, people have children, and people have a right to sleep.

"If I can't have a loud party in my own flat because it'll cause a noise disturbance for my neighbours, in what world is it okay or fair for this to be happening at such a late time."

He added: "The entire trams to Newhaven project has been controversial and a bit of a nightmare for people in the area, but this is beyond ridiculous."

The Trams to Newhaven project is on schedule for completion by spring 2023 and all major construction is expected to finish by the end of this year.

Earlier this month Edinburgh Live reported that motorists were waiting in traffic for 'over an hour' in city centre due to the ongoing tram works.

As part of the final adjustments to a section of the Trams to Newhaven project at the top of Leith Walk, a closure to northbound traffic between Picardy Place and Annandale Street is currently in place for three weeks causing many delays.

The City of Edinburgh Council have been contacted for comment.
