Llanelli has launched its own Deliveroo-style service and it's free to everyone

Llanelli town centre has launched their own Deliveroo-style service for people in the area. The delivery scheme, 'DeliverElli ' delivers products straight from local businesses to customers' doors.

Coordinated by Ymlaen Llanelli Business Improvement District (BID) and funded by the UK Government, the initiative will allow town centre businesses to offer an eco-friendly delivery service to their local customers, completely free of charge.

Customers can request delivery from participating businesses when ordering over the phone, or by shopping in person, which means you can order lunch to a local office, or a delivery of fruit and veg that’s too heavy to carry home. There are number of existing regeneration projects underway in the town, and it has an active business improvement group, Ymlaen Llanelli, which holds Llanelli's social events. Many of the events have brought bigger crowds into the centre than have been seen in years.

Recently plans to help Llanelli town diversify and recover from Covid have been approved after suffering from business loss and other major factors. Llanelli's economic growth has increased by just 3% in the past 10 years, the lowest figure in Wales, showing just how much the town needs support and change to happen.

The masterplan has been prepared with the contributions of local businesses and stakeholders and aims to strengthen the features that make the centre distinctive from the out of town retail parks and support a greater mix of experiences. It will also focus on attracting families and younger people and encourage the local population to visit more often, stay longer and spend more. The delivery service is available Tuesdays to Thursdays, and can be used for customers who live anywhere within a three-mile radius with some leeway for the outer boundaries. DeliverElli is a pilot scheme, so there may well be some bumps along the way, but regardless of any issues it's hoped it will help bring the town centre businesses closer to their customers.

Chair of Ymlaen Llanelli, Lesley Richards, is excited to trial the scheme. She said: “DeliverElli is unlike anything we’ve done before and we can’t wait to see what our businesses make of it. Delivery services have become a huge topic of discussion in the business community over the past two years, so to offer a delivery solution for those that thought it impossible before feels great – not to mention that it’s free and easy to use!”

Customers must pay their bill in advance, whether over the phone or in person at business premises. The rider will not accept payment for businesses and the service is to be used for deliveries of a reasonable spend. Customers must also provide instructions for a safe location in the case that they aren’t at home at the time of delivery.
