Liza Minnelli honoured with new storytelling award during rare public outing

  • Liza Minnelli made a surprise appearance at the GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles, where she received the inaugural Liza Minnelli Storyteller Award.
  • The 79-year-old EGOT winner was presented with the award by her long-time friend Michael Feinstein, ahead of her memoir's release.
  • Minnelli accepted the award from a director's chair, telling the crowd she was proud of their strength and belief in their convictions.
  • Her appearance follows claims in an excerpt from her forthcoming memoir, Kids, Wait Till You Hear This!, that she was “inexplicably ordered” to be in a wheelchair for her 2022 Oscars appearance with Lady Gaga.
  • Minnelli stated she was told the wheelchair was due to her age and safety, but she believed it was “bullshit”, and that Lady Gaga insisted she would not go on stage unless Minnelli was in a wheelchair.
