Liz Truss has said she is willing to consider the scrapping of speed limits on motorways. The frontrunner in the Tory leadership contest told a hustings of party members in Wembley on Wednesday that she would be "prepared to look at" a system without limits similar to Germany's, The Telegraph reports.
Ms Truss also followed in the footsteps of her rival in the race to become the UK's next prime minister, Rishi Sunak, by promising to ban smart motorways. She told the hustings audience that the "experiment hasn't worked".
The Foreign Secretary was asked by a Conservative Party member if she would consider giving motorists the freedom to choose their own safe speed on the motorway by removing speed limits. She said: “On speed limits, we need to be prepared to look at that ... I can’t give you a precise answer.”
