Moment Liz Truss is announced as new Tory leader and next prime minister
Liz Truss vowed to “tackle the issues holding Britain back” in her first speech as prime minister, in which she listed her three priorities for running the country.
From a lectern outside 10 Downing Street, the UK’s new leader said she wants to “get Britain working”, “deal hands on with the energy crisis” and “put our health service on a firm footing”.
Now officially prime minister after being appointed by the Queen at Balmoral earlier, Ms Truss is due to set out her cabinet.
Her predecesor Boris Johnson handed in his resignation to the Queen earlier. In his farewell speech, MrJohnson promised to give Ms Truss his “most fervent support” as she prepares to announce her plan to tackle soaring energy prices.
He did not apologise for the partygate scandal which led to his downfall and accused his Tory colleagues of “changing the rules halfway through”.
Labour deputy leader Angela Rayner said Mr Johnson’s speech showed he was “completely deluded” about the cost-of-living crisis people are facing over energy bills.
