Moment Liz Truss is announced as new Tory leader and next prime minister
Priti Patel announced she will stand down as home secretary after Liz Truss won the Conservative leadership.
In a letter to Boris Johnson, Ms Patel called on his successor to back “all aspects” of her immigration policies after she returns to the backbenches. Critics said Ms Patel was the “worst home secretary in living memory”.
Meanwhile, polling found that only one in five people in Britain were pleased that Ms Truss would be their new prime minister after defeating Rishi Sunak in a gruelling six-week contest.
Another poll found that even Tory voters had no confidence in Ms Truss to address the cost of living crisis threatening to put immense pressure on households over winter.
Welsh first minister Mark Drakeford was among many insisting that “action is needed now” to “save millions from hardship this winter” as the cost of living crisis deepens.
In contrast with her campaign rhetoric, Ms Truss is considering freezing energy bills as part of a support package that could be on the scale of the Covid furlough scheme introduced by Mr Sunak while chancellor.
