Reports in Colombia suggest Luis Diaz is now facing surgery following a setback with his knee injury.
Jurgen Klopp’s side will play Lyon in a friendly on Sunday as they begin preparations for the second half of the Premier League season, the opening few weeks of which was wrecked with various fitness issues.
Diaz has not played since October’s loss away at Arsenal and had been targeting a return when top-level domestic football resumes a day after the World Cup but Klopp has confirmed the Colombian international will play no part against Lyon.
Elsewhere, however, things are looking good for Liverpool.
Neither of Mohamed Salah or Roberto Firmino went to the World Cup, alongside Thiago Alcantara, Andy Robertson, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip.
With this being Liverpool’s first game back, rotation is expected throughout, with a number of youngsters also in contention.
Predicted Liverpool XI: Kelleher; Ramsay, Gomez, Matip, Robertson; Elliott, Thiago, Jones; Salah, Firmino, Carvalho.
