Reds set to release surprise financial results
When Liverpool published their 2019/20 accounts early in April of last year the picture painted was rather bleak.
Having posted a £42m pre-tax profit in 2018/19 thanks in no small part to their success in winning the Champions League, a feat that delivered around £113m in revenues to help Liverpool to a club record turnover of £533m, the accounts for 2019/20 saw that profit swing to a £46m pre-tax loss.
The onset of the Covid-19 pandemic played a significant role. While only three months of the season was affected by the pandemic, the pausing of the season in March and subsequent restart in June meant that the broadcasting revenues were severely impacted.
Games that would have been accounted for before the end of the financial year in May were now pushed back until the next accounting period, while the impact to broadcasters' schedules and the spectacle of games being played behind closed doors meant that rebates were required to broadcast partners, both domestic and international, with £330m having to be returned.
A figure in excess of £17m was to be handed back by Liverpool, a sum that was the highest in the Premier League.
The rebate was deferred until the 2021/22 season, meaning that it shouldn't appear in the club accounts for the 2020/21 period, which the ECHO understands are to be published before the end of February.

Silva on Carvalho reaction after Reds transfer fell through
Fulham boss Marco Silva says the club took the decision to ensure Fabio Carvalho stayed in West London until the end of the season after a move to Liverpool fell through on deadline day.
Liverpool were embroiled in an exciting transfer deadline day on Monday as the club, Carvalho and fans waited to see what would happen with the transfer.
After a long day, the Reds and Fulham came to an agreement on an £8 million fee for the 19-year-old, that would result in a loan back to Craven Cottage for the remainder of the season.
The 11pm deadline came too fast and the deal fell through, but Liverpool remain in pole position to capture Carvalho in the summer.
Silva was intent that Fulham would retain their young star as they continue their push for promotion back to the Premier League.
