Liverpool vs Nottingham Forest live: Reds suffer joint-heaviest Premier League defeat at Anfield

Liverpool succumbed to their joint-heaviest home defeat in Premier League history as Nottingham Forest embarrassed the reigning champions to pile more misery on Arne Slot.

The Reds dominated the first half-hour of the clash but were punished for not taking advantage of their pressure, with a set-piece once again proving their downfall as Murillo fired the visitors in front on 33 minutes.

Things then went bad to worse for the hosts just 39 seconds into the second half as Nicolo Savona blasted into the top corner to double Forest's advantage.

The game was put beyond doubt when Morgan Gibbs-White made it three for Sean Dyche's side, who having dealt Slot's first ever defeat last season put increased scrutiny on the Dutchman, now lumbered with seven defeats in his last eight on English soil.

Yates speaks to Sky

17:45 , Chris Wilson

Forest captain Ryan Yates had this to say to Sky:

"The lads were incredible. We thoroughly deserved the win and the dressing room is quite lively. We're enjoying it.

On Liverpool: "They're still a team full of a lot of quality and we knew that. When you come to Anfield, you have to weather the storm. We scored, knocked their confidence and never let them recover.

On Sean Dyche: "He's been huge, him and his staff. They came in, embraced everything about the club. Brought that togetherness with the team and the fans, that's massive at Forest. We don't want to get ahead of ourselves but it's been a great start.

"We've got the quality but we need to back that up and work harder for each other every game. We've made good progress over the last few weeks, so let's stay positive.

"It's a big psychological boost getting out of the relegation zone but it's harder staying out of it and that is what this club demands,” he added.

Rooney reacts

17:35 , Chris Wilson

Former Man Utd striker Wayne Rooney said the following about the match when quizzed on Radio 5 Live:

“Forest were outstanding defensively. They were really organised and putting their bodies on the line, we know that's what you get from a Sean Dyche team. Then they were effective on the break as well and caused Liverpool problems.

“Early on Liverpool had a few good chances and Anderson got a couple of excellent blocks in, but once Forest got the first goal then they looked like they didn't have any answers. Forest looked comfortable,” he added.

Van Dijk reacts

17:25 , Chris Wilson

Virgil van Dijk also spoke to Premier League Productions, and here’s what the Liverpool captain said:

"We concede too many easy goals. They scored obviously from a set piece again. You can ask if he was in front of Alisson, but it counted, so we're 1-0 down. We were not good in terms of battles, challenges, the fight, too rushed. It's a very difficult situation at the moment.

"There was nervousness after we conceded, but not before. We tried to rush things and that's human when you're in a difficult moment. We cleared the ones before and in the end, we'te in a very difficult moment. We don't get out of it by just speaking about it. It will take a lot of hard work.

"It's a problem. Everyone in the team has to take responsibility as well. Football is a team and everyone has to take responsibility. We have to digest this and take it on the chin. We need to work harder. We have to keep going.

"Everyone is disappointed, like they should be, because losing at home to Nottingham Forest is, in my eyes, very bad. That's the least I can say about it. Those goals we conceded are far too easy and we all have to look in the mirror. I've been at this club so long now and we've been through adversity. We will bounce back but it doesn't happen overnight. I'm not a quitter and we will keep going.

"I can't decide what the supporters are doing if they leave early. I know the fans have been through thick and thin with us. They will be there with us when we come out of this because we will come out of this,” he added.

FULL-TIME! Liverpool 0-3 Nottingham Forest

17:17 , Chris Wilson

Forest midfielder Gibbs-White spoke to the league;’s media channels after the win, and he had this to say:

"I didn't expect it but it's happened. I'm out there trying to help the team as much as possible. I thought the boys were brilliant today. Delighted we got the three points but I hope we're out of the relegation zone.

"We felt comfortable even though we didn't have the ball. We were defensively secure and that's credit to the boys and the manager. Delighted to get another goal but we got a clean sheet and three points at Anfield, which is an incredible thing.

"They're still a great team with incredible individuals. When you're in a tough patch, we know it's hard to get out of it. We knew we'd have a chance and it was about us being solid and taking our chance when we got it.

"When Sean Dyche came in, he made it clear the season starts now. He's been putting us to work, but we needed it to compete at the highest level. We've been running, running, running.

"Any game in the Premier League is difficult. We have to take it game by game,” he added.

How the table looks

17:05 , Chris Wilson

The result means that Liverpool fall to 11th in the league with 18 points from 12 games and a goal difference of -2.

Forest climb out of the relegation zone, moving into 16th with 12 points from their 12 matches.

'Liverpool deservedly in the bottom half of the table'

16:58 , Richard Jolly at Anfield

Here’s Richard Jolly inside Anfield:

“Nottingham Forest's biggest ever win at Anfield and a wonderful day and result for them. Set-piece strength and quick counter-attacking can be Liverpool's undoing, but it was yet again. But this, for Liverpool, was an atrocious day, a sixth defeat in seven league games. They are now in the bottom half of the table. Deservedly so, too.”

FULL-TIME! Liverpool 0-3 Nottingham Forest

16:58 , Chris Wilson

The referee brings the game to and end and Liverpool have suffered their joint-heaviest defeat in Premier League history as their title defence looks to have come to an end.

What started off as a promising performance saw the Reds completely fall apart after conceding the first goal, with forest performing well and deserving their win.

Salah and Gakpo can arguably count themselves unlucky today and the Egyptian is once again unfortunate as his ball in is taken by Sels.

Remarkably, it’s Forest who have another good chance, as it’s cut back to Hutchinson in the area before there’s a good block on his goalbound effort.

88 mins

Liverpool enjoying plenty of the ball at the moment but the visitors are happy to let them have it.

Moments earlier, Alisson got away with a mistake as he threw the ball straight to Hutchinson, who hit a tame cross straight to the Brazilian.

Federico Chiesa was also booked in the lead-up.

Gakpo spins and hooks a shot over, and that sums up the mood inside Anfield at the moment.

Forest make another couple of changes as Jesus and Ndoye make way for Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ryan Yates.

The hosts had made a change before that goal, with Rio Ngumoha replacing Jones.

The youngster is trying to make something happen on the left wing but he’s not got enough support at the moment, though a spell of possession on the edge of the box ends with Chiesa firing an effort over from just inside the area.

'Five Liverpool forwards on the pitch'

16:42 , Richard Jolly

Here’s Richard Jolly inside Anfield:

“3-0 Forest, and just after Slot had made it five forwards on the pitch by brniging on Rio Ngumoha.”

78 mins

GOAL! Forest have a third and that should be that!

It’s all a little too easy for the visitors too, as Hutchinson picks up the ball on the right and runs at Robertson, beating him far too easily to get 1-v-1 with Alisson.

He hits a low effort that Alisson saves well, but the ball rebounds out to Gibbs-White, who slots an accomplished finish in for 3-0!

Liverpool 0-2 Nottingham Forest

16:36 , Chris Wilson

75 mins

Liverpool are still trying to knit something together in attack but it’s looking more like desperately throwing men forward rather than any sustained attacking patterns.

It’s allowing Forest plenty of space on the counter too, and they win a corner with their latest venture forward, though Jesus heads it straight at Alisson.

Liverpool 0-2 Nottingham Forest

16:33 , Chris Wilson

71 mins

Some lovely one-touch passing in midfield from Forest opens up a counter-attack but van Dijk puts an end to it with a foul on Jesus.

The free-kick will be from a central area around 25 yards out, with Murillo and Gibbs-White lining it up.

The latter hits it but it's driven into the Liverpool wall.

'Isak has been a passenger today'

Two more changes for Liverpool as Kerkez and Isak come off for Andy Robertson and Federico Chiesa.

It was a quite day for Liverpool’s number nine as he struggled to get into the game at times.

67 mins

A yellow card for Gravenberch here as he thinks he’s fouled by Hutchinson before handling the ball, but the referee gives it the other way!

It’s a free-kick in a dangerous area around 19 yards out towards the wing, but Szoboszlai heads a powerful shot behind.

Liverpool 0-2 Nottingham Forest

Half-chances at both ends. Firstly, Salah almost latches onto a through ball to take him 1-v-1 with Sels but Milenkovic eases him off the ball.

At the other end, Ndoye has a shot blocked before Anderson’s tame follow-up is straight at Alisson.

'Isak and Ekitike paired up top'

16:25 , Richard Jolly at Anfield

Here’s Richard Jolly inside Anfield:

“Liverpool have Isak and Ekitike paired in attack, though that can feel more a product of desperation than a strategy of how to use them both. They are playing 4-2-4 now with a back four that includes two midfielders.”

Liverpool 0-2 Nottingham Forest

16:24 , Chris Wilson

63 mins

Much better from the hosts, as Szoboszlai – with his back to goal – flicks a lovely backheel pass into the path of Salah in the box, before the winger cuts back outside and lashes a shot wide.

He’s looking much more like himself today but it just hasn’t happened for him yet.

Forest make their first change as Omari Hutchinson comes on for Dominguez.

Liverpool 0-2 Nottingham Forest

16:18 , Chris Wilson

58 mins

That change means Ryan Gravenberch has dropped back into defence. He’ll be disappointed as he was constantly trying to make something happen in attack.

Ekitike’s first involvement sees him skip past a man in the box before a promising cross is cleared, and that one encouraged the home crowd.

'This has the potential to go very wrong'

16:17 , Richard Jolly at Anfield

Here’s Richard Jolly inside Anfield:

“Ekitike is on for Konate. Slot sometimes substitutes a centre-back when he is chasing a game, asking Ryan Gravenberch to fill in alongside Virgil van Dijk, and Konate was scarcely playing well, but this has the potential to go very wrong.”

Liverpool 0-2 Nottingham Forest

16:16 , Chris Wilson

55 mins

The early Liverpool attacking was looking slick and encouraging but it’s become a little disjointed as they hunt to get back into this game. Gakpo remains a threat but they need to get Salah into the game in the same way they did in the first half.

The hosts make the first sub of the day and it’s an extremely attacking one, as Hugo Ekitike replaces Konate.

Liverpool 0-2 Nottingham Forest

16:13 , Chris Wilson

53 mins

The problem for Liverpool now is that Forest can sit in and counter, and they try just that before an unlucky deflection prevents a promising through ball into Jesus.

Jesus eventually wins a corner for the visitors, and Jesus heads Anderson’s cross to Alisson.

'Bad to worse for Liverpool'

16:12 , Richard Jolly at Anfield

Here’s Richard Jolly inside Anfield:

“Bad to worse for Liverpool. A goal set up by a former Liverpool player, in Neco Williams, and for all the controversy about the first half goal and disallowed goal, Forest have now had the ball in their net three times and two of them count.”

Liverpool 0-2 Nottingham Forest

16:11 , Chris Wilson

49 mins

They needed a quick start and they got just the opposite, and the onus is now on Arne Slot to turn this one around. Still plenty of time for the hosts though, and even one goal would give them plenty of confidence.

They work it around the Forest box but Murillo heads clear for now before Williams stays down for treatment.

GOAL! Forest double their lead within 60 seconds of the second half!

It’s not great defending but Williams gets a fortunate deflection in the box before cutting it back to Savona, who side-foots a superb finish into the top corner to double the lead!

We’re back underway at Anfield! What can the hosts serve up as they chase a turnaround?

HALF-TIME! Liverpool 0-1 Nottingham Forest

16:03 , Chris Wilson

It’s been a disappointing half for Liverpool after such a bright start, but the Reds will come out knowing that they still have more than enough to win this game.

The hosts were unlucky not to score themselves early on but they found themselves a goal down after Murillo’s tidy finish on 33 minutes, though there was some controversy there too as Ndoye was ruled to not be interfering with Alisson’s line of vision.

Moments later though, VAR came to the rescue for Slot’s side as Igor Jesus saw a goal ruled out for handball after winning the challenge with Konate in the box.

Neither side has managed to grab control of the game since then but things are getting nervy at a frustrated Anfield, though home fans will be encouraged by the performances of Salah and Gakpo so far.

We’ll be back underway soon at Anfield!

HALF-TIME! Liverpool 0-1 Nottingham Forest

15:51 , Chris Wilson

The referee brings the first half to an end and it’s Forest who have a shock lead at Anfield.

Liverpool were totally dominant for much of the first half but Murillo struck the opener for the visitors just after half an hour, with the visitors arguably unlucky not to find themselves two goals up after Igor Jesus’ effort was ruled out for handball.

A fascinating second half to come, it seems.

Into the second of five minutes of added time here.

A great one-two ends with Gakpo in space in the box, but his cutback is blocked and it comes off the Dutchman for a goal kick.

Forest try to go long to Ndoye but Kerkez is there to prevent it coming to anything.

Liverpool 0-1 Nottingham Forest

15:45 , Chris Wilson

44 mins

A deep cross from Williams towards Ndoye at the back post is dealt with well by van Dijk, and the hosts will have the chance to launch a counter.

They do, with Salah beating Williams down the right before hitting a disguised shot with the outside of his boot that Sels does well to save.

Liverpool 0-1 Nottingham Forest

15:43 , Chris Wilson

42 mins

Another chance for Liverpool as Szoboszlai wings in a great delivery from a free-kick on the wing. Mac Allister heads it towards goal but there just isn’t enough power on it, and Sels catches well.

Liverpool 0-1 Nottingham Forest

39 mins

Well then, what can Liverpool muster in response at a nervy Anfield?

They’re promptly on the attack but it comes to nothing as Jones is penalised for a foul.

DISALLOWED GOAL! Liverpool 0-1 Nottingham Forest

15:38 , Chris Wilson

35 mins

Liverpool fans were worried there but a second Forest goal is chalked off!

The ball came in into the area and Konate challenged for it, losing out but knocking the ball onto the arm of Jesus, who promptly fired a volley into the net from around 12 yards.

The review shows that there was no clear and obvious error after the on-field decision to disallow the goal.

GOAL! Liverpool 0-1 Nottingham Forest

33 mins

GOAL! Out of nothing, the visitors are ahead!

The corner is headed on to Murillo and he controls it well before lashing a low effort into the net from close range!

There’s a VAR review for a player blocking Alisson’s line of sight, but the goal is given!

Liverpool 0-0 Nottingham Forest

15:32 , Chris Wilson

31 mins

A mistake from Konate when tracking back gives Forest their first corner of the day, with Gibbs-White and Jesus doing well to lead the counter.

Liverpool 0-0 Nottingham Forest

15:31 , Chris Wilson

30 mins

A couple of chances for Liverpool over the space of a minute or so as Gakpo gets free in the box before seeing his shot blocked, while moments later Szoboszlai’s effort from just outside the area is deflected over the far corner. That one had the Forest defence panicked for a second!

'Forest content playing without the ball'

15:29 , Richard Jolly at Anfield

Here’s Richard Jolly at Anfield:

“Forest are quite content to play without the ball, which is no surprise to those who have seen many a Sean Dyche side over the years; or, indeed, Nuno's Forest team. Liverpool have looked reasonably progressive and energetic so far. Their best chances have come from low cutbacks from the flanks.”

Liverpool 0-0 Nottingham Forest

15:28 , Chris Wilson

28 mins

Liverpool were knocking it around confidently on the edges of the Forest box but Jones narrowly misses finding Salah with the through ball before Konate’s foul gives the visitors a brief rest.

Liverpool 0-0 Nottingham Forest

15:25 , Chris Wilson

25 mins

A decent set-piece routine from Liverpool sees the corner delivered low to the front post before Szoboszlai knocks a pass back to Jones, who curls over from the edge of the area.

Moments later, Murillo charges through to win the ball in midfield before lashing a shot from long range that barely troubles Alisson.

Liverpool 0-0 Nottingham Forest

15:23 , Chris Wilson

22 mins

They did actually check that challenge from Ndoye for the penalty, and it was cleared.

They’re now checking something else though, as Gravenberch went in high and studs-up on high on Sangare before Mac Allister ‘clipped him’ in the box, but the penalty is waved away.

It was a poor challenge from Gravenberch though, and he might count himself a little lucky there.

Liverpool 0-0 Nottingham Forest

15:20 , Chris Wilson

19 mins

Salah already looking very threatening today, this time skipping past a challenge near the byline before his cutback is cleared at the last moment. Isak was lurking there!

Liverpool 0-0 Nottingham Forest

15:17 , Chris Wilson

16 mins

Another chance for the hosts! It all comes from Salah, who wriggles free of the challenges in the box before cutting back into the path of Kerkez.

It’s another of those that looks set to end up in the back of the net but the full-back fires over under pressure from Ndoye!

The replays are a little inconclusive but it’s surprising there weren’t any appeals for a penalty there.

'£100m well spent?'

15:17 , Richard Jolly at Anfield

Here’s Richard Jolly inside Anfield:

“It's notable that, after playing 4-2-3-1 for nearly all of Slot's reign, Liverpool are more of a 4-3-3 today, with no No 10. It's just as well they didn't spend £100m on a No 10 in the summer.”

Liverpool 0-0 Nottingham Forest

15:14 , Chris Wilson

14 mins

Better from Forest initially as Anderson finds the space in midfield to ship it to Gibbs-White, but the latter’s through ball to Ndoye had a little too much on it and the cross is a poor one as a result.

Liverpool 0-0 Nottingham Forest

15:12 , Chris Wilson

12 mins

Salah does well to win another corner down the right, and that’s Liverpool’s third of the game already. They’re really beginning to dominate this one.

Szoboszlai swings in the delivery but Forest hook it away for now, though Liverpool come on the attack immediately.

Forest have failed to settle and the hosts are starting to pile on the pressure.

Liverpool 0-0 Nottingham Forest

15:09 , Chris Wilson

8 mins

CLOSE! A great chance for the hosts, and what a block this is!

It all comes from great work from Gakpo, who beats Savona on the left before seeing his cross deflected into the path of Mac Allister.

The Argentinian is about eight yards out and his half-volley looks destined for the back of the net but Anderson is there to head it away!

Liverpool 0-0 Nottingham Forest

15:07 , Chris Wilson

6 mins

Salah’s first run at Williams results in the Egyptian winning a corner.

Gakpo picks up the delivery from the set-piece and clips in a lovely ball of his own, though Konate just misses connecting with the header at the edge of the six-yard box.

Liverpool 0-0 Nottingham Forest

15:04 , Chris Wilson

3 mins

Liverpool shooting towards the Kop in the first half, which is fairly rare.

Mo Salah and Cody Gakpo are the first forwards to have any touches, though neither can muster anything early on.

Gibbs-White has his involvement of the match as a lovely turn in midfield enables him to drive towards the box before he’s taken down by Mac Allister.

It’s just outside of shooting distance though Murillo tries it anyway, with the follow-up flying well over.

'Szoboszlai at right-back... right?'

15:04 , Richard Jolly at Anfield

Here’s Richard Jolly inside Anfield:

“So it actually seems to be Dominik Szoboszlai playing right-back (though, confusingly, Curtis Jones has also dropped in there already).

Arne Slot: Diogo Jota loss still affecting Liverpool players but is not ‘excuse’

14:35 , Jamie Braidwood

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot admits it is impossible to measure the impact the grief over Diogo Jota’s death has had on his team-mates but they will never use it as an excuse for poor results.

After Scotland’s dramatic midweek World Cup qualifying win over Denmark, captain Andy Robertson said he was “in bits” before the game thinking about the Portugal international, who died in a car crash with his brother Andre Silva in July.

Liverpool’s seven-match winning run at the start of the season helped mask any emotions the players may have been feeling but seven defeats in the next 10 raised questions about whether there may be underlying issues related to the tragedy.

Nottingham Forest's away troubles

14:20 , Jamie Braidwood

Forest are one of four sides yet to win away from home in the Premier League this season and have lost their last two (at Bournemouth and Newcastle) without scoring.

Forest have gone through that run under three different managers, however. Speaking of Sean Dyche, he has managed 17 games against Liverpool, winning three, drawing two and losing 12.

He led Burnley to victory at Anfield in January 2021, the season after the Reds were champions, which ended their 68-game unbeaten home run in the Premier League.

'Curtis Jones might be playing at right-back'

14:10 , Richard Jolly at Anfield

Here’s Richard Jolly inside Anfield:

“Arne Slot's first defeat as Liverpool manager came against Nottingham Forest. That was a rarity but Slot goes into a rematch with seven defeats in 10 and injury issues to compound other problems. We will have to see but Curtis Jones might be playing right-back today, with both Bradley and Frimpong out. Alexander Isak starts in his first Liverpool appearance for a month, and after Slot said he might have to pick the £125m man ahead of fitter forwards to try and get him up to speed. Callum Hudson-Odoi, who got the winner for Forest last year, is on the bench.”

Arne Slot 'not thinking' about Premier League title

14:05 , Jamie Braidwood

Liverpool’s 3-0 defeat to Manchester City two weeks ago left the Premier League champions in 8th place - four points behind Pep Guardiola’s team and eight behind Arsenal.

That’s after Liverpool won their first five games of the season. The have lost five, and won one, of the six since - and Arne Slot says they can’t think about being in the title race.

"We are not even thinking or talking about it. It is just about the next game,” he said. “The only focus we have is winning games of football."

Sean Dyche on building something 'positive' at Forest

13:05 , Jamie Braidwood

The Premier League table may show Nottingham Forest in 19th, only above winless Wolves, but Sean Dyche says there are “good signs” that something positive is building after the win against Leeds.

“There were good signs after the Leeds game of that feeling, not just with a performance and result, but also the connection that you get after the game and that good feeling in the camp and around the club,” Dyche said.

“He (Szoboszlai) is doing so well in every position,” Slot said on Friday. “He played really well as a full-back and a midfielder.

“Curtis Jones played there last season, Joe Gomez has played there as well but Joe Gomez has played, I think if I’m correct, 90 minutes twice throughout 2025.

Challenging but the good thing is we have enough good players available and maybe one of two of them have to play in positions they maybe don’t. That’s what we have to do.”

Alisson return comes at price for Liverpool as Arne Slot reveals double injury blow

Liverpool have been hit with a double injury blow with Florian Wirtz and Conor Bradley both out for the next few games.

And manager Arne Slot is without a specialist right-back as both Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong are likely to be sidelined for at least three weeks and seven games.

The £100m man Wirtz, who is yet to get a Premier League goal or assist for Liverpool, has had another setback in his difficult start to life at Anfield.

But goalkeeper Alisson is fit again and Slot has confirmed he is set to start against Nottingham Forest on Saturday, meaning Giorgi Mamardashvili would drop to the bench despite saving a penalty from Manchester City’s Erling Haaland in his last match.

Nottingham Forest have not won back-to-back games at Anfield since 1963.
