Liverpool TV presenter Debbie Greenwood thanks James Bond after freak accident at home

A Liverpool television personality has said she is lucky to be alive after a freak accident - but reckons she has James Bond to thank for saving her.

Television presenter Debbie Greenwood said she was lucky to be alive after being knocked down by her own car after leaving the handbrake off.

But Ms Greenwood, who was raised in Mossley Hill, said she has James Bond and Daniel Craig to thank after her quick thinking saw her roll out the way in the nick of time.

The terrifying incident occurred on the steep driveway of the five-bedroom detached house in Kingston-Upon-Thames where she now lives.

Ms Greenwood, a former Miss Liverpool and Miss Great Britain who later hosted BBC Breakfast Time, was floored by her seven seat Kia Sedona just before Christmas.

Ms Greenwood, 62, now works as a celebrant and was rushing out to meet a bride and groom after going to the gym.

She said: "It was dark and I was running late, so I probably wasn’t concentrating.

"I turned the engine off and took the key out, but I didn’t put it in park or put the handbrake on. I then went to get my stuff out of the boot, and suddenly it dawned on me that the car was moving.

"I was propelled onto the ground and could feel the momentum drag my face and body along the rough surface of the drive.

"It was horrible. The car was picking up pace and I knew that if I didn’t get out of the way I was probably going to be seriously injured or die.

"I didn’t have time to get up. Fortunately, the James Bond movie No Time To Die we’d just seen was still fresh in my mind, and I managed to roll over twice to the side.

"It was dramatic, and I honestly wouldn’t have thought of that if we hadn’t seen the film.

"And if I hadn’t rolled out of the way, I’d have died. So thank you Daniel Craig."

But Ms Greenwood's ordeal didn't end there as the car hurtled down her drive and smashed into her gates, fortunately not rolling into the road.

She added her injuries were so severe her husband Paul Coia, also a television presenter, thought she had been attacked.

Ms Greenwood said: "I realised that my hands were all wet and when I got into the light, I could see they were covered in blood from my face. I was so shocked.

"Thankfully Paul was home and I just dissolved into a heap of blood and tears.

"His first thought on seeing me was that I must have been attacked and he was really relieved that I hadn’t been.

"I had a lot of cuts and bruises, and my nose was badly swollen. I probably should’ve gone to A&E but I’d have felt a right nana having to explain I’d run myself down with my own car.

"Instead I lay on the sofa with a bag of ice on my face and lots of cloths to mop up the blood.

"My nose now is a little bit crooked, and I think I will always have a scar."

The repairs to the car and gates cost Ms Greenwood over £6,000 - but she dreads to think what more it might have cost her.

She said: "I laugh about it now because I am the only person I know who can say they knocked themselves over with their own car, but I was so, so lucky.

"In fact, it makes my blood go cold to think what might have happened.”
