Liverpool told to sign former Manchester United forward to solve injury issues

Liverpool have been backed to make a January move for Barcelona forward Memphis Depay.

The ex-Manchester United man is approaching the end of his contract with the La Liga giants and will become a free agent at the end of the current campaign unless an extension is signed in the coming months.

Depay has only played two league matches this season due to injury issues but issued a reminder of his quality on the biggest stage of all during the World Cup in Qatar. On target in the Netherlands' 3-1 round-of-16 win over USA, the 28-year-old helped shape a dangerous partnership alongside Liverpool -linked Cody Gakpo.

Jurgen Klopp's side could well do with additional reinforcements in this area of the pitch in January following news that Luis Diaz is now set for another spell on the sidelines. Diogo Jota is also out for the long term, too.

Explaining why this could be a deal to suit all parties, Anfield legend Steve Nicol told ESPN : "I mean, why not? The guy has got ability. Barcelona, considering the situation they are in financially, maybe it could work.

“If Liverpool had Depay on the bench to come on, then that wouldn’t be a bad thing. Considering how difficult these things always seem to work out, it probably seems unlikely. But as far as being a good idea, then absolutely."

Depay started his career at PSV Eindhoven, where he scored 49 goals in 124 appearances before making a £25m move to Manchester United. His time at Liverpool's rivals proved short-lived, however, and after just seven goals in 53 appearances in 18 months, he joined Lyon for £15m.

Depay rebuilt his reputation at the French side, scoring 76 goals in 178 matches before joining Barcelona on a free transfer and signing a two-year contract in the summer of 2021.
