Liverpool to enjoy 'once in a lifetime' experience when it hosts Eurovision

Liverpool will enjoy a 'once in a lifetime' experience when it hosts the Eurovision Song Contest in May next year.

There was much surprise and delight among people across the city when it was confirmed Liverpool won the bid to host the Eurovision Song Contest with it being described as a one off experience for many. However, there has been disappointment due to soaring hotel prices.

Liverpool triumphed over Glasgow at the final stage but many tourists feel they won't could stand a chance at getting a ticket never mind an overly priced hotel room. Elaine Joinson, 65, from Lancashire said: “I was hoping it would come to Liverpool, I am very pleased it has. I would love to come and see it but the hotels are going to be too expensive so it is going to be a day trip I think for me.”

Jude Malik, 21, said: "It was definitely a surprise because I thought Glasgow was going to get it but I'm delighted. It is a bigger city and it worth of the Eurovision contest being held here.

"I will try to attend , I am not a massive Eurovision fan but obviously in the city you are based in you have to think this is once in a life. It will be great for the tourism, it is a wonderful and it is great so many people travel over to show it off and city what it looks like."

Some believe it was always going to be Liverpool chosen to host the final on behalf of Ukraine because of the city's musical heritage.

John Beswick, 72 said: “The thing is I thought they would come because of the Beatles and their musical heritage.”

While some thought Liverpool had it in the bag, some were 'shocked' that the city done so well against Glasgow and see buying tickets more of a hassle.

Naomi Roberts, 18 said: "I was kind of shocked it came to Liverpool. I would try and get tickets but obviously too many people are going to try and get them so its going to be a hassle. The city is going to get busier than it is now and everywhere is going to be full. I don't really watch it but it's local so it is going to be something I am going to try and do. "
